GOODVIEW, Va. (WFXR) — Brenda East is passionate about animals. So, when she was looking for something to do following retirement, helping animal rescues was a no-brainer.
Brenda started using feed bags that people donated to her to make tote bags.
“You can’t recycle them. They don’t break down. So, using them this way is a way to recycle them,” said Brenda.
She said she got the idea while at a craft show about seven years ago. She now sells those tote bags that she makes at her home.
“There is a lot more to it than it looks like. There’s not much forgiveness if you make a mistake,” said Brenda.
According to Brenda, it takes her about two or three hours to make the bags. She said she makes several at a time, on a production line of sorts.
The bags are $12 each and the money goes to area rescues and animal shelters. Brenda sells them at area events and directly to people who contact her. Harvest Moon and Bread Basket in Floyd, Virginia buy bags from Brenda and sell them in their stores. However, she wants to expand.
“I have probably 100 or 150 to make up, at least that many. I just need a market for them,” said Brenda. She went on to say, “I probably sell, I don’t know, 500 or 600 dollars worth a year. But I could make a lot more bags than that if I had a market for them.”
