Reactions to Glenn Youngkin’s projected win in the race for Virginia’s governor

CHANTILLY, Va. (WFXR) — Republicans in the Commonwealth are reveling in Glenn Youngkin’s projected gubernatorial win over Democratic nominee and former governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe.

“I could not be happier,” said Youngkin supporter Joey Cushman. “All I’ve wanted my entire life is to have a Republican governor of the great Commonwealth of Virginia.”

“We’re really looking forward to the next four years,” said Vickie Hull, another Youngkin supporter.

Those favoring Youngkin say the political newcomer is just what the Commonwealth needs.

“I think that people want to feel positive about this state and who they are. They want to feel as though education is on the right path for their kids. They think that business is on the right path,” said Hull.

“I don’t want anybody to come in here and tell me how to raise my children,” Cushman said. “I want to have someone who comes in here and says we’re going to take control of the crime situation, we’re going to take control of the education situation, and we’re going to make Virginia a great place to bring businesses.”

However, experts say the current political environment could present some challenges for Youngkin.

“Not having been a legislator himself, he’ll need to adapt to the folkways of how the Virginia General Assembly does things,” said Dr. Karen Hult, a political science professor at Virginia Tech.

Dr. Hult says although he’s a novice to politics, Youngkin’s lack of political experience could work in his favor.

“He doesn’t have as much of the baggage that many so-called politicians like Terry McAuliffe and others who have been in public office for quite a while do have,” said Dr. Hult.

Many across the nation will keep a watchful eye on Youngkin’s administration.

According to Dr. Hult, the Republican win could lead to a lot of discussion within the Democratic Party in Congress about how to move forward as they prepare for midterm elections in 2022.
