ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR News) The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors approved the 419 Town Center plans Tuesday to revitalize the Tanglewood Mall area.
Some of the traffic improvements in the plan were already scheduled. Including streetscaping which would be improvements to the streets and signage. That could start as soon as next summer or next fall. But as far as new buildings and developments, those could take some time.
The 419 Town Center plan would turn the area into a mixed-use development, which means places for shopping, dining and living.
“Seeing what Roanoke has to offer and the potential that’s just sitting there at Tanglewood Mall. It really is important to me to see that it grows,” said owner of Wine Gourmet Brian Powell.
Although his business is outside of the project area, Powell says he would benefit from the success of the plans.
“Mixed-use retail development with apartments upstairs and businesses downstairs, it makes it feel more like a community where someone can go. And it’s not to say that we wouldn’t move the store up there or put another store up there if that was the case and it came to fruition,” Powell said.
Acting Planning Director Philip Thompson says this plan is a blueprint, and now leaders will work to see how to make it a reality, but this is just the beginning.
“I think people see the draws and the renderings and think, ‘Wow, this is going to happen tomorrow,” said Thompson.
Thompson says they have to work with developers and property owners to design the new mixed-use space.
“It’s going to be a 20 plus, almost 30-year plan. and things will change,” said Thompson.
Thompson says making the area ADA compliant has also been a priority in planning.
“We think it’s important that all people have access to this town center. it needs to be where you can safely move around no matter what your state or condition,” Thompson said.
Thompson says in about 5-10 years they’ll review the plan and make necessary changes. But he’s excited that the plan has been approved and they can start working on it.
