MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) -– The Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) Foundation announced on Thursday that it is seeking donations for its newly-established emergency student aid fund meant to assist students facing economic challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to college officials, the goal of the PHCC COVID-19 Student Emergency Response Fund is to raise money to cover emergency needs related to food and materials for successful course completion, in addition to transportation, childcare, and basic necessities.

“Around the nation, many are losing jobs or not able to work right now because of the pandemic,” says Tiffani Underwood, the Director of PHCC’s Foundation. “A number of our Patriots may be facing these hardships while trying to keep up with classwork. We want to do everything we can to ease their burdens so they can continue to be successful.”

The PHCC Foundation says it is prepared to match up to $10,000 of community donations with a goal of having $20,000 in the fund in order to help students who are in critical need.

College officials say many students already report housing insecurities, care for young children, and work multiple jobs, so in a time of crisis, these students may have a harder time meeting basic necessities for themselves and their families.

“Ensuring that our students have every resource that we can provide is critical,” says Dr. Angeline Godwin, President of PHCC. “In a time like this, our community must rally together to protect each other and to look out for our most vulnerable. This emergency fund will provide a simple, easily accessible portal so those who are willing to give can reach those who need the help.”
