Inflation is affecting vacation plans this summer for many of us. That’s why Outdoors Bound is investigating cost-effective options for getting away from it all and getting back to nature. One of those options is what we call “The State Park Solution.” We are looking at one tank trips to nearby parks where where lodging and outdoors adventures won’t break the bank. This is the second in the series.

MILLBORO, Va. (WFXR) — Think of it as an immersion in nature.

From its forested slopes, to its lake, to its streams and wetlands, Douthat State Park has something for everyone. The park is nestled into the mountains, just north of Clifton Forge in Alleghany and Bath counties.

There are more than 40 miles of trails of varying degrees of difficulty to hike or mountain bike. One of the most popular hiking trails takes you along the Douthat Lake Dam to where it empties into Wilson Creek, then down a series of falls. At the base of the falls is a pool reserved for youth fishing.

“We do love to come pretty often,” said Kylie Mohler of Augusta County as she watched her two sons fish in the youth area. “The kids love to fish in the kids fishing area, and then camp.”

Fishing is one of the most popular activities at Douthat. The lake and stream are managed for trout and other species.

“There are largemouth bass, catfish, chain pickerel, bluegill, some crappie in the lake,” said Douthat State Park Business Manager Kester Dingus. “There’s fishing year round and the lake is stocked with brown, brook and rainbow trout from October through June.”

While fishing is a draw, there are other water activities to take part in at Douthat. There are canoes, kayaks, johnboats, and hydro bikes to rent.

Camping is also popular at Douthat State Park. The park has primitive sights, full hook-up sites with electricity and water, and lodges and cabins. People are encouraged to book as early as possible because camping spaces at Douthat fill up quickly and well in advance.

There is also a full service camp store at the park, in case visitors or campers forget to bring something. Firewood is available for purchase.
