(WFXR) — As the weather heats up and we head into summer boating season, experts say it is important to review water safety procedures and checklists.

Safety gear needed onboard:

  • Life jackets or floatation devices
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Horn, whistle, or bell
  • Navigation lights
  • Engine kill switch

Captain Tony Miller of Reel Rock Charters is a Coast Guard certified guide on Smith Mountain Lake. He says you always have to be aware of your surroundings and make sure your intentions are clear.

Miller says boating safety comes down to personal responsibility, watching out for other boaters, and following the guidelines.
