UPDATE 2:02: The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims in the shooting and stabbing this morning.
The gunshot wound victim, Eric Cazares, of Covington, Georgia, remains at Lynchburg General Hospital where he is in critical condition.
Jose Ortiz, of Conyers, Georgia, who was stabbed in his shoulder area was treated and released from the hospital.
Police say both were visiting relatives in the area.
“It’s just surreal, more than anything,” said Sean-Patric Boggs, who lives nearby. “It’s just a strange thing to have happen.”
At around quarter to five this morning, Boggs slowly learned what was happening.
“I woke up, dogs were kind of barking, I heard knocking downstairs, came down, [the police] were just letting me know everything was alright.”
For Boggs, a shooting and stabbing in his neighborhood is alarming.
“I’ve lived here my whole life,” he said. “This is fairly new. It’s not the first time, obviously, we’ve seen officers do stuff. This is the first time I’ve seen it this close to the school, though, and those guys would be my concern, though, the kids at the school.”
Assistant Superintendent Clayton Stanley declined to go on camera but said Brookneal Elementary School staff were on high alert today, though they did not see anything that threatened student safety.
Meanwhile, Boggs was concerned that his car was part of the crime scene.
“That’s why I came out and I said hey, this is weird.”
He was worried that with everything that had happened, some of his items might have been stolen.
“I asked the officers if they could take like five minutes to check for a few things specifically, and they were all still there.”
The Cambell County Sheriff’s Office declined our request for an interview.
In a press release, the Sheriff’s Office says this was an isolated case and there is no danger to the public. The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.
