New initiative in Danville: Coping after tragedy

News

Community leaders coming together in Danville, just days after a shooting that left Keenan Cunningham dead.

Police say that this is a new initiative that they are doing after a community experiences a tragedy.

“Within 24 to 72 hours after a traumatic event, the program is the police department coming into the community with some of our community partners, Danville-Pittsylvania County Community Services primarily to see what the department with those services can provide for the community,” said Major Christopher Wiles, Danville Police.

They went to people’s homes in the community to give them resources and check in with the neighborhood.

The department is trying to come into the neighborhood 24 to 72 hours after a traumatic event occurs.

They say community engagement like this program is key.
