Man surrendered for questioning in double murder case

News

A new source in Belize reports a man has surrendered himself to police for questioning in connection with the double murder of a Roanoke cardiologist and his tour guide.

A poster with Christopher Espat was put out by police in Belize. He was wanted for questioning for the murder of Dr. Gary Swank, a Carillion Clinic cardiologist.

News 5 Live in Belize reported Espat surrendered himself for questioning.

Dr. Swank and his tour guide, Mario Graniel, were shot and killed on a fly fishing trip in Belize over the weekend.

Police in Belize say they’re putting more officers in the area.

“We’ll also be installing cameras there so we can monitor who comes on the island. This is all being done to ensure that we make the island as safe as possible for those persons who live and visit the island,” said Commissioner of Police Chester Williams.

There has been no word on when Dr. Swank’s family will be returning to Roanoke.
