One person in custody after hours-long standoff in Lynchburg

News

UPDATE 6:01 P.M.: Police got a call before 11 Thursday night and responded to a report of an assault on Jackson Street.

“We had officers speaking with him and we eventually called out our tactical unit as well as our crisis negotiation team who spoke with him throughout the night into the early morning hours,” said Carrie Dungan, spokesperson for the Lynchburg Police Department, “and he was eventually taken into custody and was charged with domestic assault and battery, strangulation, and abduction.”

Dungan said the victim was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries before the standoff began. Dungan said the suspect was alone throughout the standoff.

WFXR spoke with Calloway’s relatives who did not want to go on camera, but one said she is relieved he survived and was shocked by how many officers responded for one person.

“He was armed, yes, he did have a gun,” said Dungan, “and officers were not sure exactly what kind of gun it was. They could see the gun and obviously we had to proceed with caution.”

According to police, after about seven hours of trying to negotiate with Calloway, they used what they referred to as “chemical agents” to arrest him.

“Anytime we come out to a call like this,” said Dungan, “when we have somebody who has a weapon, our first concern is for the safety of residents in the area, and so we wanted to make sure that we were doing everything we could to ensure the safety of those residents as well as ensure the safety of the suspect inside.”

Another relative spent several minutes staring at the remains of the house after the standoff.
