LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The Lynchburg Humane Society has named Jan Walker as its new Executive Director, effective October 21. She replaces George Dawson, who served in the role on an interim basis for the past five months.
According to a press release from the Humane Society, Walker is stepping into the role following 18 years with Centra Health, where she most recently served as Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer.
“My entire career has centered around the desire to serve in a way that makes a true difference,” said Walker. “As Executive Director of the Lynchburg Humane Society, I will be joining an incredible team devoted to improving not only the lives of our animals, but also the lives of those who adopt.”
She was selected from more than 60 applicants locally and nationally, according to Board Co-President and Search Committee Chair Steve Blickenstaff.
“Jan’s experience leading high performing teams, the passion she demonstrated for our mission, and her senior executive skill set were key strengths,” said Blickenstaff. “Her strong local ties are a big plus.”
According to the release, Walker is a long-time resident of Lynchburg with a BA from the University of Lynchburg (formerly Lynchburg College) and a MS from Old Dominion University. She serves on the Board of United Way of Central Virginia and has served on various other community boards including the YMCA of Central Virginia and the Greater Lynchburg Transit Authority.
