Wythe County deputy shoots carjacking suspect following struggle over deputy’s firearm

RURAL RETREAT, Va. (WFXR) – A carjacking suspect is in the hospital after being shot by a Wythe County deputy, according to the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the deputy and suspect struggled over the deputy’s firearm just before 2 p.m. Saturday, when the deputy discovered both the stolen vehicle and person who allegedly stole the vehicle. After that, they say the deputy shot the suspect.

They say the suspect was flown to a hospital to receive medical treatment, while the deputy was treated at a local hospital. Virginia State Police are investigating the incident, per WCSO policy.
