ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The 2022 Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety (YOVASO) Awards Banquet honored WFXR-TV and The CW Virginia (WWCW) with a media award on Saturday.
The Virginia State Police program YOVASO is a peer-to-peer education and prevention program for teen driver safety. The works through school programs to address unsafe driving behaviors among drivers under the age of 21 by focusing on the prevention of crashes, injuries and fatalities.
On Saturday, July 16, WFXR/WWCW was honored with a media award. The YOVASO Media Award recognizes a media outlet for its support of the program and teen safe driving and traffic safety initiatives.
The program, which has existed since 2001, is funded by a grant from the Virginia DMV Highway Safety Office. Officials say the primary function of YOVASO is working with schools and youth groups across the Commonwealth to improve young driver and passenger safety.
