Flooding across Southwest Virginia causes road closures

UPDATE 3:50 p.m.: Roanoke City has announced a revised list of road closures.

UPDATE 12:32 P.M.: Botetourt County Department of Fire & EMS are evacuating people from Willowbrook Mobile Home Park due to flooding. Dozens have evacuated voluntarily, but some prefer to stay in their home. Rescue teams are prepared in case the flooding gets worse.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Following Wednesday morning’s flash flood warning from the National Weather Service, VDOT and local officials are announcing road closures across southwest Virginia.

Here is a list of weather related closures across the region on Wednesday, June 17:

Altavista

  • West Road is temporarily closed between Forest Street and Lynch Road due to minor flooding.
  • Pittsylvania Avenue has cones out due to minor flooding.

Bedford County

  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 755 at Morgans Mill Road near Goodview Road/Route 757 due to a downed tree, and at Simmons Mill Road from Saunders Road/Route 616 to Saunders Grove Drive/Route 754 due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 734 at Dundee Road from Tolers Ferry Road/Route 608 to Clover Creek Road/Route 732 due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 681 at Magnolia Drive near Patterson Mill Road/West Lynchburg Turnpike/U.S. Route 460E/U.S. Route 221N due to a tree down.
  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 691 at Thaxton Mountain Road from Union Church Road/Route 755 to Rocky Fod Road/Route 684 due to flooding.
  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 619 at Foster Road from Longvieew Road/Oakridge Drive/Quarles Road/Rolling Meadow Drive/Sliding S Drive/Route 691 to Nester Road/Route 690 due to flooding.
  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 460 in Montvale due to flooding at the Montvale Street intersection and a mudslide at the Wilkerson Mill intersection.

Botetourt County

  • Coaling Road is flooded.
  • The road around the Cloverdale Post Office is flooded.
  • Evacuations are underway at the Willowbrook mobile home park as floodwaters reach some of the mobile homes.

Campbell County

  • All eastbound lanes are closed on State Route 24 at Colonial Highway from Kent Road/Route 808 in Campbell County to the border of Campbell County and Appomattox County due to a downed tree.

Franklin County

  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 647 at Kay Fork Road from Old Franklin Turnpike/State Route 40 to Hunts Road/Kay Fork Road/Route 659 due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 659 at Hunts Road near Kay Frok Road/Route 647 due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 672 at Inglewood Road from Burnt Chimney Road/Route 670 to the dead end due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 643 at Coles Creek Road from Calico Rock Road/Route 821 to Deyerle Knob Road/Route 737 due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 759 at Rufus Road from Fork Mountain Road/Route 608 to Crooked Oak Road/Route 718 due to flooding.

Giles County

  • All westbound lanes are closed on U.S. Route 460 at Virginia Avenue near Mountain Lake Road/Winding Way Drive/Route 700 due to a downed tree.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 625 at New Zion Road near Eggleston Road/State Route 42/Route 730 due to a downed

Halifax County

  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 744 at E Hyco Road near Cherry Hill Church Road/Route 658 due to a downed tree.
  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 621 at Beaver Pond Road from LP Bailey Memorial Highway/U.S. Route 501 to Leda Grove Road/Route 647 due to a downed tree.
  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 738 at Cemetery Road from Virgilina Road/State Route 96 to North Fork Church Road/Route 602 due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 803 at Allen Trail from Dryburg Road/Route 716 to the dead end due to flooding.
  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 613 at Wagstaff Lane from James D. Hagood Highway/U.S. Route 360E to Scottsburg Road/State Route 344 due to flooding.
  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 602 at North Fork Church Road from Red Bank Road/Route 734 to Lowery Road/Route 741 due to flooding.
  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 716 from North Nichols Fairy Trail/Route 727 to Coleman Road/Route 726 due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 737 at Hudson Road from Buckshoal Road/Route 601 to West Hitesburg Road/Route 733 due to flooding.
  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 684 at Hummingbird Lane near Carlbrook School Road/Route 663 due to a downed tree.

Henry County

  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 636 at Mitchell Road from Eggleston Falls Road/Route 642 to Middle Creek Road/Route 697 due to washout.

Pittsylvania County

  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 938 at North Meadows Road from Hickeys Road/Route 927 to Jay Bird Lane/Route 684 due to flooding.
  • All eastbound and westbound lanes are closed on Route 792 at Northside Drive from Canaan Land Drive/Route 1310 to E GretnaRoad/Fairmont Road/Route 665/Route 40 due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 683 at Johnson Mill Road — from E Gretna Road/State Route 40 to North Meadows Road/Route 938 — and at South Meadows Road — from Cedar Hill Road/Route 663 to Coles Road/Route 690 — due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 677 at White Fall Road from Hermosa Road/Route 667 to Riceville Road/Route 640 due to flooding.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on U.S. Route 29 at the ramp to Route 924 due to a tree down.
  • Route 40 is closed three miles east of Gretna due to an overturned tanker truck. Virginia State Police say the Foster Fuel Tractor Trailer overturned and spilled fuel all over the roadway. There is a detour around the area, but it is unknown how long the road will be closed.

Roanoke City

  • The southbound right lane is closed at the Wonju exit on U.S. Route 220 due to a downed tree, according to a representative from the Roanoke City Police Department.
  • The road is closed at Wise and Indian Village
  • Both sides of Shaffers Crossing are closed
  • Edgewood is closed at Brandon and at Malvern
  • The road is closed at Richard and Cannaday due to a live wire
  • The road is closed at Williamson and Wildhurst due to lights out
  • The road is closed at Gus Nicks and King due to lights out
  • The road is closed at 13th and Eastern, and Baldwin and Tuck
  • The road is closed at Gus Nicks and Vale, and Vale and Kermit
  • The road is closed at Tinker and Old Moutain Road
  • 13th Street NE is closed from Mason Mill to Orange Avenue
  • The manhole cover is popping up at 1344 Mayberry

Roanoke County

  • All northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Route 676 at Back Creek Road near Starlight Lane/Route 615 due to a downed tree.
  • The 7000 block of Back Creek Road is blocked by a downed tree.
  • The traffic lights are out on East Virginia Avenue/Hardy Road.
  • Police are at the scene to direct traffic on Carson Road at Challenger Avenue due to high water.
  • One lane is closed on Chaparral Road at Electric Road due to a downed tree.
  • Glade Creek Road is closed due to flooding.

Vinton

  • Walnut Avenue is closed due to flooding.
  • Bonsack Road is closed due to flooding.
