The summer-like weather on Sunday brought a summer-like boost in business to shops near Smith Mountain Lake.
“Have you seen our pizzas? They’re huge,” said Sammy Jo Underwood, who works at Benny Adelina’s pizzeria. “I’ve sold probably between 15 and 20 whole pies.”
Underwood said the pizzeria kept busy throughout the day, getting more customers than on a typical Sunday in February.
“It’s so busy – thank God I had somebody else here with me today,” she said.
Nearby, we found some people eating outside at Downtown Pizzeria. Staff members there told us some people stopped in at the ice cream parlor connected to the pizzeria.
“We don’t normally see this much business on most days of the week,” said Jared Young, who works at Downtown Pizzeria. “Maybe just Saturdays, but that’s it.”
Shop employees we spoke with said they are hoping they will see a few more warm days ahead this winter.
“It slows down so bad in the winter, the company needs days like this,” Underwood said.
The Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce has said the lake is considered a year-round destination and invites people to explore the area during the winter.
