Virginia Tech police warn students about scam

Local News

Students at Virginia Tech are being warned by the campus police department about scammers trying to steal money, mostly from international students.

Police say unsuspecting victims may receive a call or an email demanding cash, adding that if the person refuses, they will be taken to jail or deported.

This is just one of many ways several students were scammed last year.

Officers are urging students to check the legitimacy of the caller before handing over any money or personal information.

“No legitimate law enforcement agency in the USA will ever call you on the phone and say, ‘If you don’t pay X amount of dollars, you will be arrested,'” explained Kevin Foust, Virginia Tech police chief.

Virginia Tech police say they have made an effort during New Student Orientation to educate incoming students about the issue.
