Effective problem solving is key to becoming a good leader, and it’s one of the 4 Keys of Effective Leadership Behavior.
Those keys, part of Lynda McNutt Foster’s Ebook include being results-oriented, supportive, good problem solvers, and seeking other’s perspectives.
As for whether or not you are a good problem solver – Executive coach Lynda McNutt Foster, CEO of Cortex Leadership Consulting, says the marketplace, and your staff, will tell you. If you are a leader with good problem-solving skills, Foster explains your staff will respect you, you will make good hires, and you will retain good employees.
To brush up on your problem-solving skills, Foster shares insight on to be a good problem-solving leader:
- Start with, and keep, your eye on the desired outcome
- Be transparent in your communication
- Encourage open-mindedness
- Consider multiple options
- Practice patience … should think through a problem, gather information, and take the time to find the best path to solve a problem.
Foster says, “Regardless of the problem you have to solve, you need to think first – what your outcome needs to be. You need to think about what resources you have to solve that problem. What situation are you in? Who has been in that exact problem before and who has been successful at solving it, and your research that situation.” She adds, “There are very few unique problems in this world. Somebody has had your exact same problem and has solved it. Can you find that person, find that information? And follow that same path.”
Lynda will join our Good Day Virginia team live tomorrow morning during the 7:30 half hour, along with Mike Cagle with MB Contractors.
