SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — After southwest Virginia experienced cold temperatures overnight, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) issued a warning to motorists about icy road conditions during the Wednesday morning commute.

According to VDOT’s Salem District, the chilly overnight temperatures caused roads with snow to pack and moisture to refreeze.

Officials say crews have worked overnight to apply abrasives and plow packed snow where possible.

However, VDOT Salem still issued a few reminders for drivers on Wednesday, Jan. 19:

  • Remember that bridges, overpasses, ramps, and shaded areas freeze first.
  • Drive slow during the morning hours.
  • Allow extra time for travel.
  • Leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you or behind you.
  • Brake lightly.
  • Use caution.
