Here is the press release:
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office is investigating a fire that occurred Jan. 14, 2017, in the Evergreen community of Appomattox County. Shortly after 5 a.m., Saturday, the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fully-involved fire at Morning Star Baptist Church on Morningstar Road. The church was destroyed in the blaze.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation, but, at this stage, the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

“The shock of seeing the church is actually not here any longer was sad,” said Joyce Larkin, family members went to church.
Joyce Larkin and her family came to see the rubble and smoke.
Her grandfather and grandmother lived near the church.
“My grandmother attended this church and she would walk here every Sunday along with all the other locals so this church has a very special place in our family’s heart and in the heart of the community,” said Larkin.
Even though the family has moved away, they still come to visit every year.
“Every time we come for a reunion, we always like to come back to this church where we feel our grandmother’s spirit and heart still is,” said Larkin.
Reverend Tony Cousins is the pastor of the church and says he got the call early in the morning.
“When we drove down 460, I could see the flames over top of the trees,” said Tony Cousins, Reverend Morning Star Baptist Church.
He says the outpouring of support from the community has been amazing.
“Because of what our community here in Appomattox has been through in the last two or three years and how we have come together in all the tragedies,” said Cousins.
The Morning Star Baptist Church was established in 1876 and was built in 1925. Those who attend the church say it has a rich history here in Appomattox County and it’s won’t be forgotten.
“The bible tells us that in all things we have to give thanks to God. I thank God for the structure that was here and I thank God for what has taken place today because I believe now, we have better things to come,” said Cousins.
Moving forward, Reverend Counsins says is all his congregation can do but never forgetting the history of a church much more than the ashes and smoke that is left smoldering now.
