Local News

According to court documents, trial is set to begin on August 8, 2018, for the Danville woman charged with murdering her child.

Vanessa Poteat is accused of drowning her newborn and hiding the baby’s body in a duffel bag.

Authorities found the remains nearly three years later.

UPDATE: Thursday, June 16, 11 p.m. – Danville Police are investigating after the remains of an infant were found in a duffel bag.

Police said they responded to a home on Schoolfield Drive early Sunday morning after someone discovered the infant in the bag.

Many neighbors said they were shocked to hear of the discovery.

“I thought this was, you know, a pretty safe neighborhood,” said William Williams, who was visiting the neighborhood where he once lived. “It was always quiet. You know, you never had anybody trouble you.”

Williams said he never met the people who lived at 53 Schoolfield Drive, where the body was discovered, according to a search warrant.

“Somebody texted me and was like, ‘Did you hear about the dead baby in the duffel bag on Schoolfield,’ and I was like, ‘What are you talking about? There’s no way. There’s no way,'” Williams said.

According to the search warrant, the duffel bag belonged to a woman who stored it at the home of her ex-boyfriend’s mother. Police said it was the ex-boyfriend who found the infant’s body in her duffel bag. The documents say it appears the infant had been dead for some time.

Williams, a father himself, said he finds the news troubling.

“I would not leave my kids out my sight,” he said.

The search warrant reveals police also seized a towel and a handwritten note.  Williams said he believes the discovery serves as a chilling reminder that parents should always be vigilant.

“You have shootings going on in Danville, you know; you have dead babies in a duffel bag,” he said. “I guess my message to everybody would be just to, you know, help each other out. You know, watch your kids closely.”
