ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Police continue to investigate Saturday evening’s crash that left a Roanoke motorcyclist dead after hitting a vehicle in Roanoke County.

The Roanoke County Police Department says the fatal crash took place at the intersection of Williamson Road and Commander Drive at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8 after a motorcycle heading southbound on Williamson Road struck a vehicle pulling off Commander Drive.

According to the department, the motorcyclist — identified as 36-year-old Chauncey Savage — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Even though Savage was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police say the preliminary investigation indicates Savage’s speed contributed to the crash.

The department announced the extended closure of Williamson Road between Florist Road and Abney Road at 8:36 p.m. on Saturday following the crash. However, at 1:23 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9, police released a statement saying Williamson Road was back open.
