UPDATE 5 A.M.:
One man is in custody after firing a gun at deputies, and striking a Virginia State Police car late Wednesday night in Iron Gate.
Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office was called to shots fired in the area of Commerce Avenue and 8th Street around 9:30 Wednesday night.
Once deputies and a trooper arrived, 59-year-old Marshall Dale Meadows fired on officers from inside a home striking a Virginia State Police car as they arrived.
Officers were able to make contact with Meadows and talk him out of the home shortly after midnight.
A sheriff on scene tells WFXR he’s happy everyone is alive this morning.
“They hunkered down – afraid for their life,” said Sheriff Kevin Hall, Alleghany County sheriff.
“Got behind cover and stay behind cover. We had an officer who knew the guy for a long time. Officer grew up with the guy, was able to talk to the guy out.“
No officers discharged their weapons, and Meadows was taken into custody without incident.
Meadows has been charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer and more charges are pending.
Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an investigation.
Authorities have confirmed that there is a standoff situation in the Iron Gate area of Alleghany County. Sheriff Kevin Hall confirms at least six shots have been fired.
According to Sheriff Hall, officers responded to the scene around 9:40 p.m. Hall says Virginia State Police is on scene and a Botetourt Emergency Reponse team is also on the way.
