UPDATE: Danville Public Schools Superintendent says student safety is #1 priority

UPDATE: 18-year-old Darick Richardson is facing charges after a shooting near a school in Danville. 

An investigation showed he shoe a gun on the perimeter of Johnson Elementary School near Northmont Boulevard and Melrose Avenue at a shelter commonly used by the public but wasn’t directed at the school. 

Richardson was taken to the Danville City Jail without bond. 

Here is the latest press release: 

Danville resident Darick Lamont Richardson 18, has been charged with three felonies in connection with yesterday’s shooting incident at Johnson Elementary School.

Richardson is charged with the following:

Discharging a firearm on school property in violation of VA State Code 18.2-280

Aid in concealing a stolen firearm in violation of VA State Code 18.2-108.1

Illegally possessing a firearm on school property in violation of VA State Code 18.2-308.1

The investigation revealed the shooting incident occurred on the perimeter of the school grounds near Northmont Blvd and Melrose Ave around a shelter area commonly used by the public and was not directed at the school.

Richardson is currently housed at the Danville City jail under no bond pending his first court appearance.

This investigation is continuing.

UPDATE: Sophia Borrelli spoke with Superintendent Jones Thursday morning about how he felt during the lockdown as well as policies and procedures the schools follow during incidents like this.

An 18-year-old was arrested after shooting near a school in Danville. 

It happened on Wednesday at about 3 p.m. when a call told 911 that a man was shooting at Johnson Elementary School near Northmont Boulevard and Melrose Avenue.  The caller also said they saw people running.  

Police arrived and arrested an 18-year-old man on Nor Dan Drive.  

Johnson Elementary School was on a lock out while police responded, but the investigation shows that the shooting wasn’t directed at the school or students of the school.

Today at approximately 3:00 PM a caller contacted the 911 center stating a male was shooting at Johnson Elementary School near Northmont Blvd and Melrose Ave. The caller further stated that people were seen running.

The caller described the suspect as wearing green pants, a black hooded sweatshirt and being light skinned. The caller could see the suspect had a gun and was last seen running on Melrose Ave.

Danville Police Investigators in the area responded and within minutes detained a 18 year old male suspect a short distance away on Nor Dan Drive. 

During the initial response, Johnson Elementary School and Danville Public School officials were notified and the school was placed in lock out.  

The initial investigation indicates the shooting was not directed at the school or students of the school. There have been no reports of injuries at this time.

The investigation into this incident is continuing.
