ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Two people are dead and three more are seriously injured after a vehicle with six occupants — including a teenager and an infant — hit a tractor trailer at a high speed early Sunday morning.
According to Virginia State Police, the crash took place at 4:31 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16 when a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse lost control while heading southbound along I-81 at a high rate of speed and struck a tractor trailer from behind near mile marker 131.
The driver of the tractor trailer reportedly did not sustain any injuries.
However, police say the Chevrolet’s driver and front seat passenger — identified as Belinda Chavez and Melissa Ayala, respectively — died in the crash. Two women and a 14-year-old girl who were also in the Chevrolet sustained serious injuries and were taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, according to authorities.
Fortunately, the infant in the Chevrolet was properly secured and reportedly unharmed in the crash.
Authorities say the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team and the Motor Carrier Inspection Team assisted with the crash and all lanes were reopened on I-81 near mile marker 131 at 8:27 a.m. on Sunday.
Police say the the speed of the Chevrolet factored into the crash.
