(WFXR) — Two people — one from central Virginia and one from the New River Valley — are dead after two separate incidents along the Blue Ridge Parkway on Sunday.

According to the National Park Service, dispatchers received a report of a person in distress near Milepost 63 on the Blue Ridge Parkway at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, May 23.

Authorities say law enforcement rangers, along with Amherst County rescue personnel, responded to the area and discovered two passengers of a vehicle pulled off the shoulder of the road.

The driver of the vehicle — identified as 55-year-old Kevin Cox of Lynchburg — was pronounced dead at the scene, with preliminary investigations indicating he suffered a medical emergency, officials say.

Then, at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, the National Park Service says rangers were dispatched to reports of a single-motorcycle crash near Milepost 162.

According to officials, the motorcyclist — 22-year-old Matthew Gauck of Pilot — was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations indicate Gauck was traveling at a high speed, which authorities believe was a primary cause of the crash.
