UPDATE 4:15 p.m.: The crash on I-77 north at mile marker 18.2 has also been cleared.
Traffic can be expected to be relatively heavy – compared to normal weekend volumes, due in large part to Thanksgiving travelers returning home.
UPDATE 3:50 p.m.: One of the two crashes on I-77 in Carroll County has been cleared.
The crash at mile marker 22.6 on northbound I-77 is no longer an issue and traffic is moving normally.
The other crash at mile marker 18.2 is still active, according to VDOT, where backups are reported to be nearly one mile.
UPDATE 3:30 p.m.: VDOT is reporting two new crashes along I-77.
Both crashes are along the northbound side of I-77 in Carroll County.
The first is at mile marker 18.2 and involves a multi-vehicle crash. The north left shoulder and left lane are both closed in this area.
The second crash is at mile marker 22.6 where all lanes are reported to be open; however, backups behind the crash scene are approximately two miles.
Drivers can expect delays if traveling in this area.
UPDATE 12:55 p.m.: It appears that the remaining two crashes that we were following on area interstates have been cleared.
A VDOT traffic camera as the crash scene on I-81 north at mile marker 159.5 in Botetourt County shows that traffic is moving normally in that area.
The other crash scene at mile marker 27 on I-77 north in Wythe County also has a VDOT camera in the area which also shows traffic is moving. It’s bumper-to-bumper, but speeds appear to be consistent with the opposite lanes.
UPDATE 12:30 p.m.: Here are the latest details on the three crashes on area interstates:
- Botetourt County
- I-81 north at mile marker 159.5 has backups of four miles
- I-81 south at mile marker 159.9 HAS BEEN CLEARED
- Wythe County
- I-77 north at mile marker 27 has backups of around seven miles.
UPDATE 12:20 p.m.: There are three crashes that are creating problems on area interstates:
- Botetourt County
- I-81 north at mile marker 159.5 has backups of three miles
- I-81 south at mile marker 159.9 has backups of two miles
- Wythe County
- I-77 north at mile marker 27 has backups of around five miles
Drivers are urged to slow down, leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle ahead of you and don’t drive distracted.
More vehicles will be on the road this weekend as holiday travelers are heading home, so expect a slower commute.
(WFXR) – A pair of crashes are slowing traffic – one on I-77 north in Wythe County and the other on I-81 north in Botetourt County.
The crash on I-77 north is located at mile marker 27 where the northbound left shoulder and left lane are both closed.
VDOT is reporting backups are approximately one mile in this area.
The crash on I-81 is located at mile marker 159.5 where the VDOT says the northbound left lane and left shoulder are both closed.
Around one mile of backlogs are being reported.
VDOT traffic cameras are showing mounting backups in this area.
Drivers should plan on finding another route around each area.
As the long holiday weekend is starting to wrap up, roads are expected to be more congested than normal. Drivers are urged to pay close attention, obey posted speed limits and do not drive distracted.
