Truck driver charged after crash on I81 in Roanoke County

UPDATE (9/7/18) — A driver has been charged after a crash on Interstate 81 Thursday night in Roanoke County.

State Police said a Stevens Transport tractor trailer was driving south on I81 when it ran off the roadway, crossed the median, and hit a tractor trailer and a RV.

The three people in the RV were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The tractor trailer drivers were not injured.

The Stevens Transport tractor driver, Shekhe Abdirahmani Chedi, 32, of Dallas, TX was charged with Reckless Driving.

Chedi’s truck was carrying frozen french fries.

The other tractor trailer was carrying fruits and vegetables and overturned during the crash.

Troopers said HAZMAT crews were called to clean up the fuel that had leaked from the 18-wheeler’s tanks.

VSP said northbound 81 remains closed as crews continue to clear the wreckage, and it is not known when the road will open again.

VDOT 511 cameras show delays on Interstate 81 due to a crash in Roanoke County.

The wreck happened around 9 p.m. Thursday at mile marker 146 near Hollins.

Delays have been reported in the northbound lanes.

It’s unclear if any injuries have been reported.
