Troopers remember the life and legacy of Trooper Lucas Dowell

Local News

Here at the Virginia State Police headquarters in Appomattox, the flags fly at half staff, a car sits out front with flowers. A trooper is not forgotten.

“He put others in front of himself and that was one of the greatest qualities about him,” said Jonathan Barbour, Virginia State Police Trooper and Lucas’ roommate.

Trooper Jonathan Barbour not only worked with Trooper Lucas Dowell, but was his roommate.

“People knew him, people worked with him, and he had his family, but I kinda knew him on both fronts and that will be very special,” said Jonathan Barbour, Virginia State Police Trooper and Lucas’ roommate.

Many troopers spoke about the love Trooper Dowell had for his job.

“He would be the first guy to jump up and go to work when some sort of call came through and he carried that with him everyday,” said Lt. David Edwards with Virginia State Police.

“He loved doing that job, he really loved that job and I think that’s exactly where he wanted to be,” said Jonathan Barbour, Virginia State Police Trooper and Lucas’ roommate.

Many knew him as a goofball in the academy like Trooper Gavin Lee.

“He was just a ball of joy. He figured out life and lived it to it’s fullest,” said Gavin Lee, Virginia State Police trooper and went through basic academy with Lucas.

Those who are close say they will never forget their brother in blue.

“I stopped to get gas at our area office and we have to write our mileage down for the gas receipts and the last three digits of the mileage was 876, which was Lucas’ badge number and I lost it,” said Gavin Lee, Virginia State Police trooper and went through basic academy with Lucas.

“I think just who he was as a person, as a man will carry on for itself. It’s that powerful,” said Jonathan Barbour, Virginia State Police Trooper and Lucas’ roommate.
