UPDATE: Crash cleared in Montgomery County after causing six-mile backup on I-81 North

UPDATE 5:06 p.m.: VDOT says the crash that backed up Montgomery County motorists for miles on Sunday afternoon has been cleared from I-81 North, allowing traffic to return to a normal flow.

UPDATE 4:06 p.m.: According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the traffic backup is now six miles.

UPDATE 3:45 p.m.: According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the traffic backup is now five miles.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), a traffic accident has caused a three-mile backup on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County.

The accident occurred at mile marker 123.3, which is 4.8 miles south of VA-603 and Exit 128.

VDOT says one northbound travel lane is closed.
