Three year old boy gets VIP treatment at Salem Rodeo

Local News

It’s Gilbert Slovis’ first time at the Salem Stampede Rodeo.

“He was just like cows, cows, cows, so seeing the bulls was definitely his most favorite thing,” said Kristine Slovis, Gilbert’s Mom.

Gilbert was treated like a VIP going behind the scenes to meet the characters and see the animals.

For Gilbert and his mom and dad, this experience is a change from their daily lives because Gilbert has a congenital heart condition.

“He’s three and a half years old and he’s had three open heart surgeries already,” said Kristine Slovis, Gilbert’s Mom.

“A lot of the times they are just going to hospitals and it’s centered around the illness, this is just centered around fun and enjoying a night as a family together,” said Jackie Harris, Dreaming of three.

A night, Gilbert and his family can remember for years to come.

“We pray that he lives a very long and fruitful life, but you just live each day like it’s the last and we just want to do everything we possibly can with him,” said Kristine Slovis, Gilbert’s Mom.

As Gilbert takes a victory lap in the truck just like the pros, his smile says it all.
