The Taubman Museum held it’s annual lunar New Year Celebration on Saturday.

Several hundred people gathered to celebrate the Year of the Rooster.  People dressed in traditional Asian wardrobe to enjoy several performances from dancing to singing.  There were calligraphy demonstrations and activities for children.

The celebration is a collaboration between the museum, Local Colors, and the Roanoke Valley Sister Cities.
Organizers say it’s one way to educate people about the valley’s diverse communities.

“It’s important for the community to come together and learn about  the different cultures in our community here in Southwest Virginia, and our Asian friends and families that are living here,” said Cindy Petersen of the Taubman
Museum.

Organizers say the lucky numbers for the Year of the Rooster are five, seven, and eight.
