Virginia State Police warn citizens of scam involving holding child for ransom

Local News

SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — The Salem division of the Virginia State Police is warning citizens about a scam starting up around the region that involves a caller claiming to have the victim’s child and demanding money for their release.

Police say this scam circulates every few years and is designed to place the victim in a state of panic.

According to Virginia State Police, the caller may even have a child screaming in the background.

These calls are reportedly generated from outside of the country, but they may have what appears to be a local phone number.

Multiple law enforcement agencies in the region have received complaints about these calls taking place, officials say.
