Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center receives first baby black bear

Local News

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — On Friday, the Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center in Roanoke received the first baby American Black Bear of 2021.

This bear was found, motherless, in Floyd County eating goat feed. Experts were watching this bear from a distance for hours with no sight of its mother.

The baby bear weighed only 2.8 pounds.

The Department of Wildlife Resources said that due to the cooler night-time temperatures, they had no choice but to bring the baby into the center so it would not freeze.

The bear will be transferred to the Wildlife Center of Virginia on Saturday, April 17 in Waynesboro.

The Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center says it is very unusual for a bear cub this small to even be out of the den this early in the season.
