VSP: Charlotte County driver dead after crashing into logging truck on US-15

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — On Monday morning, authorities announced the identity of a Charlotte County driver who died after hitting a logging truck last week.

According to Virginia State Police, state troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 15 (Kings Highway) near the intersection with Route 630 (Fort Mitchell Road) at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18.

Police say a 2000 Mack logging truck was traveling west on U.S. 15 when it was rear-ended by a 2021 Kia Sorento.

The driver of the Kia — identified by officials as 22-year-old Kendal N. Tharpe of Saxe — was wearing a seatbelt, but still died at the scene of the crash.

Meanwhile, the truck driver was not injured in the crash, according to authorities.

As of Monday, Aug. 23, Virginia State Police say this fatal crash is still under investigation.

Note: Virginia State Police issued a correction on Tuesday, Aug. 24 about the age of the driver who died in last week’s crash.
