DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — You see them in every community. For most of us, the school bus-yellow or engine-red fire hydrants go unnoticed. But, in Danville, there are a few that may just catch your attention.
For the past six years, the Danville Fire Department (DFD) has explored its creative side by painting hydrants around the city.
Every May since 2018, fire stations in the area compete to see who can decorate a hydrant the best. The content has been a staple in the community, and now around 12 hydrants in the city are uniquely painted, showing character.
“Our annual hydrant contest is a fun way to engage our community and participate in Make Danville Shine Month during the month of May,” said Stephen Williamson with the Danville Fire Department.
Here are the four hydrants entered in this year’s contest:

If you’re looking for a vacation, just turn down the street — Station 6C brought the beach to Danville!
It seems like Station 4C is excited about Caesars Casino coming to the River City.

As if this wasn’t already a perfect spot for neighborhood dogs to visit, Station 6B made it clear whose territory it belongs to.
Before you even call 911, Firefighter Vernon will already be the first one on the scene with Station 2C’s design.

Residents are encouraged to vote for their favorite fire hydrant design by clicking here.
While this is a fun activity for the community to participate in, the DFD adds that only crews are allowed to paint hydrants.
