UPDATE 3:03 p.m.: A 77-year-old driver was brought to the hospital after a tractor-trailer hauling tens of thousands of pounds of lumber overturned on U.S. Route 29 South in Danville Friday morning.

According to the Danville Police Department, public safety personnel responded to a crash on Route 29 near the Route 58 interchange shortly after 6:15 a.m. on Friday, April 23. When officers arrived, they found a tractor trailer truck lying on its side in the highway.

Police say the investigation showed the vehicle was traveling west on Route 58, took the off-ramp to travel south on Route 29, the driver lost control and overturned across the southbound lane of Route 29.

The driver — identified as John Fielden Clark, 77, of Suffolk — had to be extricated from the truck, taken to the emergency room at SOVAH Health Danville, and later flown to Duke Medical Center, the department says.

The tractor trailer was reportedly heading to Ridgeway and carrying 80,000 pounds of lumber.

As crews removed the vehicle and its load from the highway, Route 29 South was closed for several hours, resulting in traffic being diverted onto Business Route 58 then back to Route 29 just south of the crash.

Members of the Danville Police, Danville Fire, and Danville Public Works departments — as well as VDOT — reportedly helped block and re-route traffic.

According to police, charges are pending further investigation.
