DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) raised more than $16,000 to benefit area nonprofit organizations with their new ‘Wreaths for a Cause’ holiday program.

Similar to their former holiday program, ‘Decorating the Trees for a Cause,’ area businesses and organizations made wreaths in honor of their chosen charities to raise funds by votes or donations.

As many as 65 wreaths were on display throughout the IALR atrium. From Nov. 29 to Dec. 14, the public was able to cast their vote for their favorite wreath by making a donation.

More than 50 charities were represented and each charity was able to keep the monetary donations from the two weeks of voting.

Goodyear Tire and Rubber’s wreath brought in the most money and was in support of the United Way of
Danville-Pittsylvania County
. For raising the most funds, an additional $500 was awarded to the nonprofit.

In addition, two random drawings of all wreaths garnered $500 bonuses each for Danville Pittsylvania County Cancer Association, supported by Computer Bookkeeping & Tax Service, and Caswell Pet Lifeline Rescue, supported by Linden Rose Boutique.

All wreaths were then auctioned off, raising more funds for the supported nonprofits, during an open house with more than 100 attendees.

“Not only was the open house event a festive and fun holiday gathering, but it was truly rewarding to see the generosity of the guests in attendance as they gave toward the many worthwhile causes represented,” said Ellen Bass of IALR. “It was the first year we introduced decorated wreaths as a fresh take on our previous holiday tree program, and it was fulfilling to see it so well received. We thank all of the businesses, organizations and open house attendees who gave their time and resources to help the nonprofits in
our communities.”
