‘The Book Lady’ aspires to hand out 1 million books to Danville residents

DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — She’s known as “The Book Lady,” and she’s on a mission to provide books to her Danville community.

Jennifer Williams says her idea started after she donated 900 books to children who were living in housing projects throughout the area.

“I want to work hard – to actually change something and I said, I want to give away a million books”

Jennifer Williams

That’s right. She’s looking to give away one million books!

Williams began her quest in 2017 when she learned a sobering statistic from a local group that involved an illiteracy rate of 18.8-percent in the region.

Statistically, that’s nearly one in five adults who cannot read at a third-grade level which gave her the fuel to continue her journey.

Williams gives books to children and adults either by hand or via small libraries scattered across the community.

So far, in four years, Williams has handed out 64,141 books — well on her way to her goal of one million books.
