UPDATE: Rocky Mount Police confirm man’s arrest in Martinsville stemmed from 2019 shooting

UPDATE 5:30 p.m. 5/11/21: WFXR News has learned what charges the man who was arrested Monday evening in Martinsville is officially facing.

As WFXR News reported below, Richard Hannon, Jr. is being charged with second-degree murder. However, the charge stems from the 2019 death of Tony Bruce.

The incident surround the arrest took place in June 2019 when police responded to the 100 block of Bland Street for a report of shots being fired.

Bruce was struck by gunfire and was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Police in Rocky Mount, where the charges stem from, say that Hannon is the primary suspect in the case.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – A man who was wanted on second-degree murder and firearm charges out of Rocky Mount has been arrested Monday night.

Martinsville Police Lt. Sandy Hines tells WFXR News that Richard Hannon, Jr. was taken into custody on Monday, May 10 just after 6 p.m.

Virginia State Police’s SWAT Team executed a search warrant, issued by the U.S. Marshals Service, at a home in the 700 block of Forest Street in Martinsville.

Hannon was wanted for a case that dates back to 2019.
