UPDATE 12:35 p.m. (7/19/22): On Tuesday morning, police took a teenager into custody for multiple charges in connection with Sunday evening’s shooting near a Danville convenience store that sent a man to the hospital.

On Tuesday, July 19, the Danville Police Department says officers arrested 19-year-old Jahsun Le’Andre Townes of Danville for aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm in a public place, and wearing a mask while committing a crime in connection with the shooting of a 42-year-old Danville man along Memorial Drive.

According to authorities, the investigation has shown that Townes had previously interacted with the man before he reportedly shot at him on Sunday, July 17.

In other words, this shooting was not a random act, officials say.

The department says investigators worked to identify Townes as a suspect and were able to obtain warrants against him on Monday, July 18.

Authorities then worked tirelessly to track down leads on Townes’ whereabouts, which led to his arrest at an apartment on Springfield Road Tuesday morning.

Police tell WFXR News that Townes was held without bond in the Danville City Jail and that no other suspects are being sought in connection with this case.

DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — An investigation is underway in Danville following a Sunday evening shooting that sent a man to the hospital.

According to the Danville Police Department, at approximately 6:50 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, officers were dispatched to the Memorial Drive area between North Ridge Street and Poplar Street for a report of shots fired.

Shortly afterward, authorities say a 42-year-old Danville man arrived at the SOVAH Danville emergency room with a single gunshot wound to the leg.

Officials say the man was shot after he left a convenience store in the same area of Memorial Drive where the 911 call reported shots fired.

Police tell WFXR News that the initial investigation indicates this probably not a random act, so investigators are working to identify witnesses and the suspect in this case.

The department says the suspect is believed to be a young man — possibly in his teens to early 20s — who ran away in the westbound direction on Memorial Drive.
