DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — Police in Danville have arrested a teenager after a fight between two groups escalated into a shooting Tuesday morning, injuring a passenger in a nearby vehicle.

According to the Danville Police Department, officers were called to the 1400 block of North Main Street in Danville on Tuesday, April 6 and learned a vehicle traveling in the 1200 block of North Main Street was hit by gunfire.

Police say a 42-year-old Danville resident — who was a passenger in the vehicle — was struck and taken to Sovah Health Danville with non-life-threatening injuries.

The department says the investigation revealed the vehicle was not involved in the incident and did not appear to be the intended target.

However, investigators discovered a fight occurred between a group of individuals in a resident’s yard in the 1200 block of North Main Street and another group in a vehicle that was traveling on North Main Street. That altercation reportedly escalated and resulted in multiple shots being fired.

According to police, the vehicle that was involved in the fight was also struck by gunfire, but no other injuries were reported.

Authorities say 18-year-old Iyshon Jonoz Jones of Danville, was arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with four counts of attempted malicious wounding, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle, and four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
