UPDATE: Averett University lifts lockdown after earlier email threat

Southside Virginia News

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.: Averett University has lifted its lockdown, stemming from an email that the university received regarding a threat.

There are no specifics regarding the contents of the email, but an email of similar nature was also reported earlier at Hampden-Sydney College.

DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — Danville Police were alerted to an email that was deemed as threatening Saturday morning.

The email was sent to Averett University and made a general threat towards the university.

Out of an abundance of caution, Averett University quickly went into lockdown.

Danville Police went to both the Main Campus and the North Campus to provide security while investigators began running down the source of the message.

Police believe that there is no indication that the threat was legitimate and say that the timing of the threat has passed.

Averett University will remain on lockdown until further notice as Danville Police continue to investigate and provide a presence at all campuses throughout the afternoon.

The COVID-19 vaccination event at the E. Stuart James Grant North Campus is continuing as planned.
