Pittsylvania County looks into money options to support county upgrades

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Pittsylvania County will be seeing significant upgrades over the next 10 years.

The county is expected to get a new jail and courthouse, a new county office facility, and renovations within the school system. While these upgrades will help the county, the Board of Supervisors has been looking into alternative solutions for revenue to reduce the tax burden on the property and real estate owners.

According to county officials, they plan to collect money from those visiting and traveling through the area. The plan includes increasing the meals tax from 4 percent to 6 percent, creating a transient occupancy tax for anyone who stays in the county for 30 days or less, and putting a one percent sales tax increase on the ballot for the upcoming election.
