PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A bridge in Pittsylvania County may have a new name in the near future.

The Chatham South Bridge on U.S. Route 29 could soon be called the “Clyde L. Banks Sr. Memorial Bridge.”

Banks was a Navy veteran and activist who was jailed during a civil rights sit-in in Danville.

He also operated the Traveler’s Inn for 40 years and was known as a strong community leader.

In addition, Banks helped many African Americans find jobs, worked to integrate the area’s public schools, and served as a leader for several community organizations.

The Commonwealth of Transportation will make their vote on Wednesday, April 21. The meeting will be virtual and open to the public.
