UPDATE: Police arrest Danville man after store manager survives being shot in the head Wednesday

Southside Virginia News

UPDATE 5:44 p.m.: A man is facing multiple charges after being accused of shooting a Danville store manager in the head Wednesday afternoon.

The Danville Police Department says officers responded to a 911 call about a shooting at 3316 Riverside Drive inside the American Freight, Furniture, Mattress, and Appliance at 2:25 p.m.

When police arrived on the scene, they say 32-year-old Jaivon Alonzo Scott ran away, but officers chased after him, took him into custody nearby, and recovered a small caliber handgun.

The victim, according to the department, was a 29-year-old store manager who was taken to the hospital with a single gunshot wound to the head. However, when officers visited the victim later Wednesday afternoon, they says he was alert and in stable condition.

Authorities say Scott, a Danville resident, was a store employee and was at work when he shot the manager and left the store. Even though other employees were in the store at the time, nobody else was injured.

We recognize the shock an incident like this can have on a community. Officers went to each business in that shopping center this afternoon to let the employees and customers know the scene was safe and provide them with as much information as we had available at the time.

While this is a tragic event, we are thankful for the witnesses who provided good information; dispatchers who quickly got that information out; and our officers who arrested Scott without hurting him or letting anyone else get hurt.

Police say Scott has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm in an occupied building, shooting a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
