MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — One person is dead after a house fire that sparked Saturday evening in Martinsville.

According to Martinsville Fire and EMS, a 911 call came in at approximately 7:51 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15 about a house fire at 24 Barton Street. The caller was a neighbor who reported seeing flames inside the home.

When they arrived, crews found flames from the upper left bedroom area and the attic of the house. Martinsville fire crews started fighting the fire while searching the home for anyone inside. They found a person dead in the room where the fire started.

“We would like to ask the community to share in our thoughts and prayers for the family during this tragic event,” said Martinsville Fire Chief Ted Anderson.

The person was taken to the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death and for identification.

A Martinsville Police Department investigator helped the Martinsville Fire & EMS Fire Marshal’s office, staying on scene until about 3 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16 to search for the cause and origin of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
