HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Police are investigating the deaths of two men involved in a car crash on Route 220 Business in Henry County early Wednesday morning. One man reportedly died in the car, but the other died nearby after being hit by a tractor-trailer.
According to Virginia State Police, troopers responded to a report of a pedestrian being hit on Virginia Avenue at approximately 2:23 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a pedestrian — identified as 21-year-old Espana Ezequiel Santiago of Martinsville — dead at the scene after being hit by a northbound tractor-trailer while walking in the northbound lanes of Virginia Avenue.
In addition, just south of the location where Santiago was struck, authorities say they found an overturned 2014 Hyundai Sonata with 24-year-old Breyner Dominguez dead inside. Dominguez, also a Martinsville resident, was not wearing his seatbelt.
According to Virginia State Police, the investigation determined the Sonata was traveling north on Virginia Avenue at approximately 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday when it ran off the right side of the road, went through the guardrail, and overturned just south of the Route 220 Bypass exit ramp, killing Dominguez.
Authorities say Santiago then exited the vehicle and was walking in the roadway when he was hit by the tractor-trailer a short distance away from the crash site.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was reportedly not injured.
Officials say they have yet to determine which man was driving the Sonata when the wreck occurred. However, DNA samples were collected from the airbags to determine the occupants’ position at the time of the crash.
Police tell WFXR News that no charges are pending in connection with the ongoing investigation into this crash.
