CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred on Feb 28.
Around 10:05 a.m. on Tuesday, an Albermarle County Police Department (ACPD) detective spotted and approached a wanted individual in the City of Charlottesville.
The individual, who would later be identified as 44-year-old Billy Sites, then allegedly fled on foot to a wooded area on Emmet St., near the 250 bypass, and fired several rounds of ammunition.
Police told residents to shelter in place as they established a perimeter around the area. Sites then fled from the wooded area, towards an occupied parking lot. Less lethal force was attempted, but Sites allegedly pointed a firearm at officers, forcing them to open fire.
Billy Sites, 44, was transported to UVA Medical Center, where he died from injuries.
ACPD and the Charlottesville Police Department are fully cooperating with the Virginia State Police, as this is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (434) 977-4000.
