DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — Averett University announced Friday that no spectators will be allowed at any home events indefinitely, including any additional students, faculty, or staff not competing or working.

This comes after Thursday’s USA South Athletic Conference announcement regarding fan attendance for indoor sports.

“After evaluating the current conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have concluded that it is in the best interest of our campus and community to focus on the health and safety of those participating in the events. In order to maintain that focus and to mitigate exposure, we will play our home games without fans in attendance indefinitely.”

Meg Stevens, Vice President, Director of Athletics and Operations.

Fans can still follow many of Averett’s athletics programs online through live-streaming of home events on AverettCougars.com.

“Conducting intercollegiate contests during the pandemic is a challenge in and of itself. Focusing efforts to provide safe game conditions is the priority at this point. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide any updates to the spectator policy as they occur.”

Dr. Tom Hart, USA South Commissioner

Averett will continue to work with campus, city, and state health officials along with the USA South as the semester’s athletics schedule progresses.
