MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — A small dog really can make a big impact in the community. Thanks to a touching story about how the adoption of a sweet little pooch changed so many lives, the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA recently won a $5,000 grant from Petco Love.

According to Petco Love, Angela Blazer was a caregiver for an elderly veteran in need of companionship, so she connected him with a fluffy dog named ‘Precious,’ who seemed to enjoy helping others.

From then on, Blazer and Angela became a certified therapy team so they can bring their “special breed of care and compassion wherever they go,” Petco Love said in a statement on Thursday, Dec. 16.

The foundations says that Blazer’s story about the effect Precious had on her life was selected as one of 100 Petco Love Stories winners from across the country this year, earning the $5,000 lifesaving grant award for the Martinsville Henry County SPCA

“These powerful Love Stories reflect the importance of pets in our lives. Whether the best or worst of times, the love of pets can change everything,” said Petco Love President Susanne Kogut. “Reading these touching tales strengthens our resolve to create a world where every shelter pet finds a loving family, and no pet is unnecessarily euthanized. This year, we are proud to award more than $1 million to further empower lifesaving organizations, like the SPCA of Martinsville and Henry County, that work tirelessly to save pet lives.”

Since 2013, more than 20,000 adopters have shared how their pets have changed their lives in the annual Petco Love Stories campaign, with Petco Love granting nearly $7 million to the hardworking animal welfare organizations that make these adoption matches possible, the foundation says.
